GDC News: Battlestar Galactica MMO coming soon

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Announced yesterday at the annual GDC, German based MMO developer Bigpoint will be bringing a browser-based MMO version of Battlestar Galactica to consumers “this fall.” The license was granted by SyFy, which currently has a growing gamer/television tie-in project. This is SyFy’s second space-themed MMO tie-in, as last month they combined forces with Atari to promote the release of Star Trek Online.

Bill Kispert of NBC Universal comments, “Battlestar Galactica is a supremely gameable intellectual property, with compelling character classes, a fantastic array of ships and weaponry, multiple worlds, and a dramatic storyline.”

Bigpoint, which is set to open a San Francisco office this year, will develop the game, and is projecting a “fall” opening at Syfy.com for a limited 30 day run. The final version of the game is slated to run on the Unity game engine, which allows for 3D graphic rendering in web browsers. The unity engine is currently employed in Tiger Woods Online, and has the advantage of being cross platform (sorry Linux users – not for you).

Players will be able to choose between Human or Cylon races, and will feature a combination of space combat, missions and exploration. Now, granted, Bigpoint themselves title the game as an “adapted” version of the popular series – but hardcore fans might find a few holes in the overall concept. The series itself focuses on the remaining 45,000 humans after the initial Cylon attack. Will there only be 45k Human slots available? Would only Capricans be able to be pilots? Would Aerilons be the only in-game farmers? And what about that worker rebellion that stemmed from the Tylium refinery ship? The upside of the entire concept is, “All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.” Built in replayability!

Bigpoint CEO Heiko Hubertz comments, “Cooperation between Bigpoint and NBC Universal is a very important strategic step for us. Battlestar Galactica has a huge and passionate fan base. We are proud to be able to publish such an internationally famous title as one of our online games. For the first time ever, we’re relying completely on Unity in order to offer our users fantastic game graphics right in their browsers.”

Syfy.com and Atari partner to promote upcoming Star Trek Online

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

Atari and television network Syfy.com have recently announced a partnership aimed at promoting the new upcoming MMO, Star Trek Online, scheduled for a February 2 2010 release. The promotion will feature a two day Star Trek Marathon to be broadcast on syfy, which will feature an elusive “Syfy Bundle”, available at Syfy.com’s Game Center.

startrek-logoAlmost a year has past since Syfy (then Sci Fi) announced their commitment to the gaming industry with their partnerships with Acclaim Games and Zookazoo, and this Atari partnership falls nicely inline with the network’s initiatives. This new partnership allows Syfy.com to build and promote a one-stop hub for Star Trek Online, where fans and gamers can view new content, participate in special contests and sweepstakes, and…..”Even purchase an exclusive bundle via digital download.”

The limited time “Syfy Bundle” will be available for purchase from Syfy.com/StarTrek, and will contain:

  • “Neodymium Deflector Dish” — An in-game item grants a bonus to Auxiliary power, boosts maneuverability, and increases the effectiveness of a ship’s Science abilities.
  • “500 Cryptic Points” — These micro-transaction credits can be used to purchase in-game items and unlock unique bonuses.
  • “Syfy Store Discount” — Purchasers of the Syfy bundle will receive 15% off their next purchase at the Syfy.com store.

To aid in the promotion of not only the online game, but obviously, Syfy’s own gaming efforts. The network will prime the pump with a two-day Star Trek marathon starting on Monday February 1st from 8am to 5pm featuring “Star Trek Enterprise” episodes, and conclude on Tuesday Febrary 2nd (8am – 9pm) with episodes of “Star Trek Next Generation”.

“Syfy is the perfect home for Star Trek Online,” said Jim Wilson, President and CEO of Atari, Inc. “By offering broadcast support, exclusive content and in-game bonuses, fans of Star Trek and the science fiction genre will be able to take part in this title’s much anticipated release.”

Alan Seiffert, Senior Vice President Syfy Ventures, added, “The Syfy audience has immense passion for video games. With that said, we are making a significant commitment to growing our presence in gaming and establishing Syfy.com’s Game Center as a leading destination for cutting edge interactive entertainment from a news, entertainment and even sales perspective. This joint venture with Atari helps showcase the types of unique partnerships we will look to develop to provide our audience with exclusive experiences tied to today’s hottest interactive entertainment.”

I am your father…or…at least your USB port

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Happy Friday all!  Dunno about you guys, but I’ve had a bit of a long week, and am looking forward to my weekend.  Therefore, I decided we need a bit of a break today from ‘pure’ gaming news.  Let’s call it Funny Friday…or Just for fun (cause it’s Friday?).

Whatever you want to call it, I found this one for the die hard Star Wars fans out there: Star Wars USB hubs.  They’re both have 4 USB ports available and are going to run in the neighborhood of $66 when the Japanese decide to release them upon the rest of the world.  Geekstuff4u.com is offering a pre-order sale here.

Both of these guys take up a massive amount of desk space, and again, only offer 4 extra ports.  In other words, unless you know who TK421 is, and why he isn’t at his post, there’s probably little chance you’re going to grab one of these up anytime soon.  BUT…if you do know that Han shot first, and think that these things smelled bad on the outside…well then step right up!

Darth and R2 both have animated bodies, light up features, and make sounds (that can be turned on or off…depending on your current state of animosity towards your Star Trek loving workmates) every three minutes while connected to a computer.  Darth’s eye glow red (ummm…which episode was that again?) and scan for intruders, while R2 beeps and spins his head looking for…errr…yeah.

Anyway you look at it, these USB hubs are big space takers, have only 4 ports, glow, beep, and ogle.  Practical?  Absolutely not.  Possibly one of the biggest badges of Star Wars fandom you can display on your desk (while still getting away with….but it’s practical..it’s a USB port)?  You Betcha!
