True Games’ Mytheon to commence open beta starting April 28th

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

Almost a year and a half since it’s initial announcement, True Games’ epic free to play Strategy/RPG title Mytheon is getting ready for a public showing. Starting April 28th, True Games will open the doors to the general public. Although not an official release, this period will serve as a “soft launch”, as players will have unlimited access to the game.

Doing a bit of a celebratory dance, True Games will be offering what they’ve dubbed the “Champions of Mytheon” package to a very exclusive group of just 2000 players. The first 2000 to get on board and plunk their cash down will receive lifetime access to discount currency, premium offers, exclusive, one-time only items, as well as sneak previews of new content before its release. The package goes on sale in early May (no official word from True Games on an exact date), and will also allow purchasers access to an early play period before the games’ official launch. And if that wasn’t enough, True Games will also be chucking in some Mytheon Coins to be used in the cash shop, vitality elixirs, stone bundles, limited edition Mytheon shirts and autographed posters, and the option to include players’ real name in the game credits under “Champions of Mytheon”.

As noted above, during this open beta, Mytheon’s cash shop will be open for business for the first time. At various times throughout the beta, players will receive “Mytheon Coins” that they’ll be able to spend at the cash shop. Items up for sale include armor and weapons, power stones, potions, and more.

“This is an exciting time for all of us and for Mytheon as we prepare to open the flood gates and let everyone experience mythology come to life in an action setting,” said Peter Cesario, director of new business and product development at True Games Interactive. “We have already witnessed the development of a thriving community and we are proud to offer them the Champions of Mytheon package which allows them to get an ever-important head start on play, exclusive goodies, and access to never before seen content that will truly make them feel like the gods.”

As a reminder, Mytheon is a free-to-play multiplayer Strategy/RPG/Action game where players battle in classic mythology scenarios, challenging gods to determine they players’ fate. Mytheon players, or “Stonecasters” as they’re known, are über humans with the ability to cast spells, summon minions, and build structures to aid them in battle. Naturally, a various assortment of classes are available, each offering it’s own unique combat abilities.

Cross Fire nets 25,000 users in 3 weeks

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

It looks like 2009 is quickly shaping up to be the year of free-to-play first-person-shooters (FPS).  Admittedly, the timing of Subagames’ release of their open beta stats is slightly suspect, appearing just one day after Nexon had released their whopping 2 million North American player stats.  However, Cross Fire’s numbers are quite impressive in their own respect: netting 25,000 registered players since the opening of the beta on January 30, 2009.  The open beta runs through the end of February, and if G4BOX Inc. and Wicked Interactive Ltd., the North American publishers of Cross Fire stay on target they could end up doubling this number.

Chief Executive Officer of Wicked Interactive Garvin Yeung says, “We knew there was an audience out there that was really anticipating Cross Fire, so we expected a good result.”

G4BOX CEO Howard He adds, “But even we are amazed by the overwhelming response that Cross Fire has garnered thus far.”

As previously reported, the Cross Fire website had received 1.9M hits prior to the November 7th closed beta launch, two-thirds of which came from the US.  Cross Fire has been a success in Asian markets, with an excess of 500,000 users simultaneously playing.  The North American open beta introduced new features including an in-game friends list, new maps, weapons, and items.  In addition, a military ranking and stat-tracking package has been introduced.  Wicked and G4BOX have started tracking players’ progress and activity since the open beta onward so that players are able to accurately gauge their skills against the rest of the Cross Fire community.  And as with any respectable MMO, Cross Fire now features a clan system whereby players can band together to play in persistent teams.  Supported by a Subagames clan page, this feature maintains rankings of all clans not only active in Cross Fire, but across the entire catalogue of Subagames’ free MMO’s.

Developed by SmileGate and Neowiz, Cross Fire is an online military FPS developed for the PC platform.  Players choose their role in this conflict scenario shooter, either Black List or Global Risk mercenaries.  They are then thrown into the thick of battle by joining a combat team that must cooperatively work together in order to complete objective based operations.  And while Cross Fire does sound a bit like the rising number of free-to-play FPS’s currently making their way to market, their standout feature is the unique “Ghost Mode”.  In this mode, one team is in possession of a top-secret cloaking device that allows them to become invisible to the opposing team.  “Ghost” teams are armed only with knives, and must utilize stealth tactics to hunt and track the other team.  Other play modes available include Team Death Match, Search and Destroy and Elimination modes.

Naturally, as with most free-to-plays, Cross Fire features an extensive set of character customization and upgrade options.  This in-game currency used in Cross Fire, may also be used in any of Subagames’ other titles including Metin2, ACE Online and Prison Tale, as well as the upcoming Prison Tale 2.

zOMG! Now open to the public

Monday, November 10th, 2008

If just writing zOMG! wasn’t fun enough, this new free-to-play offering from Gaia Online will certainly bring a smile to your face.  Unleashed upon the public last Thursday, this is Gaia’s first casual MMO game.  Having completed a successful closed beta test, the open beta zOMG! is an adventure game that pits players against monsters in 16 different zones with a wide variety of battle rings and recipes to choose from.  Gaia Online seeks to successfully meld the attractiveness of the online social community experience with a fun and enjoyable MMO gameplay experience.

“Our top priority is providing a high-quality MMO gaming experience that’s fun and challenging, and also user-friendly for all levels of players,” said David Georgeson, Senior Producer of zOMG! at Gaia Online. “We received a lot of great feedback from gamers during our Closed Beta, so we’re throwing open the doors as we update the game with new features and additional content.”

Listening to the community, and it’s needs and wants, has never been something that Gaia has shied away from, and by opening the beta doors, they’re expecting an even larger pool of feedback and suggestions to learn from.  Gaia is actively soliciting feedback from players via the site’s message boards and forums.

Lucy Newman over at gamertell.com reports on Kate Pietrelli’s announcement surrounding zOMG!

“In development since 2006, zOMG! is a fun and engaging casual game that blends social online community experiences with accessible MMO gameplay. Gaia community members currently hang out in the virtual world with their friends, watch movies online together in the theater, share artwork in the online art gallery, and chat through the Gaia Instant Messaging (GIM) system. The community asked for new ways in which they could interact and play with their friends in Gaia, and so the MMO game was designed to be an extension of the Gaia virtual world with all the fun social elements of chatting and hanging out with friends, in addition to playing a challenging multiplayer game with quests, monsters, battles and more. Gaia Online will monetize the game through the sale of virtual goods (battle armor, rings, etc.), which tie into their current microtransactions based business model.”

While I’ve yet to personally give the game a look-over, I have visited and spent some time with Gaia, and I can’t imagine they’d deliver anything less than outstanding.  Grinding rep this weekend was about as thrilling as watching the grass grow, so perhaps a break from the uphill battle is just what the doctor ordered….and with a name like zOMG!  you just KNOW there’s got to be some fun somewhere therein.
