NVIDIA powers mobile media and gaming via Verizon 4G LTE

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

GPU developer and manufacturer NVIDIA, together with Verizon Wireless, has recently announced that they’ll be demoing NVIDIA Tegra 2 mobile superchip equipped devices at this years Consumer Electronics Show. The new processor significantly ups the ante in the mobile entertainment field, particularly in combination with Verizon’s newly deployed 4G LTE network.

The demos are meant to illustrate that through this combination of technologies, consumers have the power of home-quality media and gaming content in the palm of their hands, all while on the go. Also on tap, NVIDA is showcasing the Tegra 2’s multiplayer gaming abilities, particularly across various platforms from tablets to desktop PC’s.

“Last year, we showed the first 1080p video stream over LTE with NVIDIA,” said Brian Higgins, executive director of LTE ecosystem development at Verizon Wireless. “That was just the start. Tegra is bringing never-before-seen experiences to mobile devices, and we’re confident developers and ultimately consumers will see the benefits of our 4G LTE network.”

In addition to the gaming and video functionality, NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 powered tablets will be on hand to demonstrate a wide variety of multimedia content readily available including books and magazines, as well as untold amounts of content available via downloadable applications via the devices’ 3D user interface.

“Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network provides the bandwidth to drive a rich trove of content to your mobile device,” said Michael Rayfield, general manager of the mobile business at NVIDIA. “Teaming this network with Tegra delivers the freedom to watch and play what you want, when you want.”

Although this is an NVIDIA and Verizon featured announcement specifically targeted at the CES market, it’s important to remember that the rumors of Verizon’s impending Apple iPhone availability has been receiving significant credit over the past few months. Verizon’s been nabbing up iPhone and Verizon related URL’s, and as featured in this announcement, Verizon launched it’s 4G LTE mobile broadband network in December. The 4G LTE network provides speeds up to 10x faster than the 3G network, and reaches approximately 1/3 of all Americans. So although NVIDIA will be delivering top quality entertainment and gaming to Tegra 2 devices, is this nothing more than a testing ground for when Verizon gets their hands on the coveted iPhone reseller license?

Smokin’ Hot ‘Number Six’ Tricia Helfer to speak at NVISION 08

Friday, June 6th, 2008

NVISION 08 is a three day mega-event taking place this August 25-27 in San Jose, California. Thousands of engineers, designers, developers, researchers, artists, enthusiasts, gamers, film makers, business professionals and consumers from around the world will be descending on the ‘next town over’ from San Francisco.

If the sheer collection of top tech toys wasn’t enough, NVIDIA dropped it like its hot today by announcing that super hottie Tricia Helfer will be speaking at the convention.

“We are very excited to have Tricia Helfer speak at NVISION 08,” said Rob Csongor, vice president of corporate marketing, NVIDIA. “As an actress in the 21st century, she is an iconic example of how visual computing is transforming the television, film, and entertainment industries. She interacts with both real and virtual characters, and real and virtual sets, in award-winning television dramas as well as video games. Our NVISION 08 attendees will have the special opportunity to hear and see through the eyes of Tricia how story making and entertainment have become stunningly realistic and engaging through the use of visual computing technology.”

Some of you die hards out there might remember that Tricia is not only the object of desire from the hit series ‘Battlestar Galactica’ but also played the role of General Kilian Qatar in EA’s Command and Conquer 3. And….to top it all off, no, you’re not the only one who thinks this hottie has got the goods. In addition to her acting both on screen and in the sound booth, she’s also been awarded with the “Ford Supermodel of the World Contest” and has worked for magazines such as “Elle,” “Vogue,” and “Cosmopolitan.”

So mark those calendars now folks. If you’ve got the opportunity to hang with some heavy hitting heroes, all the while kickin’ it and drooling over Helfer, I say….why the h#*$ not?

AMD amping up gaming arm

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

AMD is rolling out a new branding scheme to highlight hardware that is optimized for gaming software. The new AMD Game! Brand is meant to bring ‘console-like’ simplicity to desktop/laptop users.

The New logo with be plastered on all PCs that include an Athlon X2 5600+ processor, 2GB of memory, a Radeon HD 3650, and an AMD 770 or Nvidia nForce 500 series chipset or higher.

The super swanky “AMD Game Ultra” logo is reserved for top shelf systems only. These Johnny Walker Blue Label systems need to have a minimum of a Phenom X4 9650, 2GB of memory, a Radeon HD 3870, and an AMD 770 chipset.

According to AMD’s site, “We’ve tested the games, hardware, and components to make sure you get an amazing playing experience, right out of the box. And best of all, you don’t have to know every detail about your PC to get started.”

In other words, AMD will be reviewing, selecting, and matching peripherals such as mice, keyboards and controllers for max compatibility (um, where do I apply for this gig?). Again, stressing the console like, plug and play right outta the box simplicity.

Whether you prefer to build your frag machine from the ground up, or simply leave the choices up to AMD, my guess is that we’ve going to be seeing a bit more of AMD in the gamers galley.

My gaming Rig is better than yours!

Monday, May 5th, 2008

One of the beauties and attractions to MMO gaming is the incredibly detailed artwork and sound that goes into their creation. Many of us even support the graphics card industry by continually upgrading cards and even overclocking them (you never heard that nvidia) ;)

Well, ladies and gentlemen, hold on to your hats, as record label owner Jeremy Kipnis has created what we believe to quite possibly be “The Greatest Show on Earth”.

OMG! This is what $6 million will buy you. Kipnis’ theatre is installed in his home in a vaulted ceiling room that measures 8 feet high at the rear of the room and 16 feet high at the screen end of the room, with dimensions of 26.5 feet wide and 33 feet long. In other words: large, but not a tremendously big room.

Within this room, he’s packed one of the largest screens installed in a home in the world, measuring 18 feet wide! Just give that a think for a sec. Even if you’re gaming on a 30″ Cinema HD cinema display on your desktop, this guy plays on something 7x as large!

The main video comes from a Sony SRX-S110 Professional Video Projector and is supplied by a variety of inputs:

Sony BDP-S1 Blu-ray Player
Sony PlayStation 3 Gaming Console
Toshiba HD-XA1 HD DVD Player
JVC HMDH-5U D-VHS Recorder
SATA Drive (72 HDTV Hours Total)
Mark Levinson N° 51 DVD/CD Media Player
Pioneer HLD-X0 Hi-Vision HDTV MUSE Laserdisc Player

If the video isn’t enough to blow you away, let’s talk about the sound. Kipnis is running 13 Theta Digital Generation VIII 32-bit 8x Oversampling Dual Processors (link this) for audio processing, and then amplifying it via:

2 Mark Levinson N° 33h Amplifiers
30 McIntosh MC-2102 Amplifiers
3 Crown Macro Reference Gold Amplifiers

Being projected through:

16 Snell 1800 THX Music & Cinema Reference Subwoofers
8 Snell THX Music & Cinema Reference Towers
10 MuRata ES103A Super Tweeters
3 Snell THX Music & Cinema Reference LCR-2800 Center-Channel Speakers

Umm… yeah. Kinda makes my rig look mighty sad at the moment.
