MTV Networks Entertainment Group launches 345 Games to develop for Comedy Central and Spike TV

Monday, April 11th, 2011

The MTV Networks Entertainment Group has recently announced the creation of 345 Games, a new gaming division that will develop gaming related products for COMEDY CENTRAL and Spike TV.  Senior Vice President of strategy and business development, MTVNE, and General Manager 345 Games, Dan Yang announced that the new gaming unity is slated to develop products for the franchises and will be fully supported in both on and off air efforts, as well as online.  First on tap are new products for COMEDY CENTRAL’S “Ugly Americans”, as well as Spike TV’s “Deadliest Warrior”, series.  The later will build upon the success of “Deadliest Warrior: The Game,” which to date has racked up 400,000+ downloads since it’s Xbox 360 and PlayStation launch.

“COMEDY CENTRAL and Spike TV squarely target the video game audience.  Our ‘Deadliest Warrior’ gaming franchise exploded out of the gate last season,” said Yang in a statement.  “With the launch of 345 Games, we are tapping into the passionate fan base of both COMEDY CENTRAL and Spike and creating an enhanced interactive experience based on our hit shows and brands.”

345 Games is a new creation from MTV Networks, although the division isn’t fully independent.  The gaming arm will work closely with the Networks’ existing talent as well as supported by existing Marketing departments and channels.  345 Games plans to reach out to independent developers who are interested in producing content for the COMEDY CENTRAL and Spike brands.

As for first offerings, from the Spike TV side of things, 345 Games will build upon the existing traction developed by “Deadliest Warrior: The Game,” “Deadliest Warrior: Legends,” seeks to take the franchise in a different direction, as the new title will ditch the weapons and armor, and pits gamers against some of the deadliest warriors across the span of time.  The game will feature new heroic warriors, fighting options, a more precise projectile system, more arenas, and a new campaign mode.  In other words…better everything.  Players will be armed with Deadliest Warrior signature weapons and combat skills are unique to each character played.  “Deadliest Warrior: Legends,” is slated to be available for Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network for $10.

From the COMEDY CENTRAL side of things, 345 Games will be launching “Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon,” in conjunction with the season two launch of the animated series of the same name.  The four player side scroller will capitalize on the horror-comedy series appeal, and feature an exclusive script authored by the shows writers and creators.  Adding to the exclusivity, the game will feature a new character unique to the game, and feature voiceovers provided by the original cast.  Similar to Deadliest Warrior, “Ugly Americans: Apocalypsegeddon” will be available for Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network for $10.

MTV dives headfirst into Social Gaming with Social Express acquisition

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Announced yesterday, MTV Networks have successfully acquired social games maker Social Express Inc. The acquisition marks MTV’s first formal entry into the social gaming space. The network intends on developing social gaming content based on original IP, as well as shows and characters from MTC, Nickelodeon and other brands under the MTV/Viacom banner. I can’t wait for the Jersey Shore social game. MTV is aiming for a Q3 release date of their first social gaming offering.

mtv_logo“Social gaming is one of the biggest drivers of the explosive growth in social media – it’s fun, it’s engaging, and it’s shareable,” said Judy McGrath, Chairman and CEO of MTV Networks. “Social Express brings us strong experience and know-how in this burgeoning space, which we’ll supercharge with the IP and scale of Nickelodeon and other MTV Networks brands to create great new social gaming experiences for our fans and cool tools for independent developers as well.”

In addition to social games creation and distribution, MTV also plans on leveraging Social Express’s expertise to launch a new publishing platform that will be used to encourage social games developers to contribute.

Nickelodeon Digital will see the first integration with Social Express influence, as Social Express co-founder and CEO Tony Espinoza will now oversee social gaming strategy and development as Vice President and General Manager of Social Gameing for MTV Networks’ Nickelodeon Kids & Family Group. Do they really fit that on a business card? Social Express’s other co-founder, Neil Souza will now take on the roll of Vice President of Technology, Social Games.

“The Social Express team is a great addition to our gaming unit, and they are set to be a key part of our growth strategy,” said Stephen Youngwood, Executive Vice President for Digital, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids & Family Group. Again…what’s with the overly long titles?

The Social Express acquisition serves to augment MTV’s current portfolio of gaming destinations including AddictingGames.com, Shockwave.com, Nick.com/games, Nick.com Arcade, Neopets, Game Trailers, and Xfire.

Bigpoint.com tops 100 million registered users

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Hamburg, Germany based free-to-play gaming portal Bigpoint.com has recently announced that they’ve topped over 100 million registered users. The number now places them as the world’s largest online German community. Not just gaming communities, but the largest German online community overall. The 100 millionth user also puts Bigpoint on top in terms of browser-based gaming portals, but also one of the world’s largest online gaming sites.

us.bigpointBigpoint, launched less than 4 years ago claims that they see 250,000 players register every single day. “A few years ago, I never would have dreamed that we would one day reach this crazy goal,” comments Heiko Hubertz, CEO of Bigpoint GmbH. “This is a great achievement for us. But, the approximately 250,000 new daily registrations at Bigpoint.com shows that we have the potential to be even bigger.“

With over 50 different free-to-play titles available, Bigpoint attributes it’s success to the free-to-play model. At Bigpoint, users can test and play every aspect of the game for free, for as long as they want. Should they chose to delve deeper into their favorite Bigpoint game, they can purchase virtual goods with real money to heighten their gaming experience. And as with most other free-to-play online gaming portals, Bigpoint also offers players the opportunity to gain a number of these RMT items, however play time is greatly increased.

And while Bigpoint’s 50 various games is enough to keep almost any gamer happy, in May of last year, Bigpoint opened the doors to third party publishing, as well as making a set of development tools available to independent developers. The advantage here is twofold: Major corporations including Sony have already taken advantage of Bigpoint’s (now) 100 million user database, and the DevLounge tool gives independent developers the tools to stand side by side with giants such as Sony.

Looking forward, 2010 will see attention to license and royalty games from Bigpoint. The company already has a number of quality titles in its arsenal, most notably, Sony’s ‘Free Realms’. The company also has the post-apocalyptic strategy game ‘Nemesis 2030’ waiting for launch, as well as the anime role-playing game ‘Wonder King. In addition to Sony, Bigpoint boasts a media partner list with over 1000 accounts. MTV, NBC, MySpace and Facebook are all associated with Bigpoint.

Microtransactions arrive in Capcom’s Mega Man 9

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

With the release of the digital download only Mega Man 9, there’s another great feature awaiting players: customized upgrades via microtransactions.

Released late last week, Capcom’s Mega Man 9 will offer players the ability to update the game via puchaseable features.  While the content is not yet available for download, the online manual lists a number of optional features and the pricelist for each.

Here’s what Mega Man 9’s got on tap thus far:

  • Endless Attack: (300 Wii Points) Test your skills on a stage without end. Try to break the record for getting the farthest. Releases October 6.
  • Hero Mode: (100 Wii Points) Play the game with a more difficult level of enemy distribution. Releases October 20.
  • Superhero Mode: (100 Wii Points) Play the game with a super difficult level of enemy distribution. Releases October 20.
  • Proto Man Mode: (200 Wii Points) Play the game as Proto Man. You can use the shield while jumping. There is no story for Proto Man. Releases October 6.
  • Special Stage: (100 Wii Points) Gives you another Time Attack stage to try, including a new Boss at the end. Results will be displayed in the rankings. Releases October 20.

After giving Mega Man 9 a go, let’s hope that there will be additional items for sale in the game, as this is proving to be the most challenging Mega Man to date.  Not quite enough to make me want to bag it quite yet, but getting very close.  There’s a fine line between challenging and downright impossible.  As with any new game, there’s always a lot of trial and error involved in boss fights (and some NPC’s as well), but Mega Man 9 presents players with a seemingly impossible trio of robot elephants that lob multicolored balls at you.  After doing a bit of digging around, it seems that I’m not the only one with elephant troubles: Patrick Kiepek over at MTV is having the same difficulty.

From what I’ve played thus far, it’s been quite a challenge, and I’m not quite ready to shelve Mega Man 9 quite yet, but as previously mentioned, hopefully Capcom/Wii intend on either a content upgrade (I’m not asking for a cakewalk…just a tab bit easier guys) or some juicy (temporary) microtransaciton goodness that’s going to help me blast said elephants (and hopefully Concrete Man as well) into next week.

“Mega Man 9” arrived on WiiWare and PSN last week and goes live on Xbox Live Arcade this coming Wednesday.  Who knows…maybe Microsoft users will have an easier time with it?
