Perfect World coming to US with micro transaction model

Thursday, July 17th, 2008

The official English Version of the Chinese Developed MMO Perfect World has been announced and will begin closed beta testing on August 19th.

While originally a subscription based business model, Perfect World Entertainment, a wholly owned subsidiary of Perfect World Co., Ltd. decided to move to a micro transaction model in order to better benefit players and the business itself. Perfect World Entertainment says that this MMO has “established a level of quality not found in other free-to-play titles.”

The game itself has received praise around the world, and is heralded as one of the most successful 3D MMORPGs in over 10 countries worldwide and offers a deep online world with three unique races and six different classes. In addition, Perfect World provides users with on of the most in-depth character creation services available. Of course, Perfect World features all the trappings of the classic MMORPG with quests, lore, and a massive selection of customizations, items, and fashions. Presumably, these will be the main ticket micro transaction items.

Perfect World is not just limited to PVE, but also has a rich PVP section. Perfect World International hosts weekly PVP ‘Territory Wars’ whereby guilds compete to rule predetermined areas of the game. The winners can gain a massive reward in addition to added benefits of ‘ruling’ an area.

“We know that players have been waiting a long time for Perfect World International to be published here in North America, so we’re very excited to be sharing this announcement with all the gamers.” said Dr. Alan Chen, CEO of Perfect World Entertainment Inc. “Our mission is to provide the highest quality of online services to our customer in North America.”

Could Perfect World be ‘The Big One’ that breaks the micro transaction, free to play model wide open? While there’s been massive traction for free to play games, we’ve yet to see any one of them create a massive buzz, and feature truly AAA game quality graphics and end user experience. By the looks of the graphics alone and the promised super deep content experience, Perfect World might just be the horse to watch in the micro transaction pony race.

ROSE Online goes free to play

Wednesday, July 16th, 2008

GravityInteractive’s popular Korean Developed MMO ROSE Online will be switching to a free to play model starting July 29th.

Since 2005 ROSE Online has been available via an $11.99/month subscription fee.  Direct from the ROSE Online news page:

Rose Online has been a part of the Gravity family suite of game titles for several years now. We are going to update ROSE’s subscription model to attract more users than ever before.

On July 29 we will be turning the servers over to Free to Play where all accounts in good standing may log in.

On July 15 we have removed the subscription page from the Website. From July 15 through July 29 new subscriptions creation will be unavailable.

It is advised that all Players who utilize the paypal re-occurring subscription model, login to paypal and cancel the re-occurring payment. We will automatically be canceling all remaining re-occurring payments (to not re-occur), around the 22nd.

Any Remaining Subscription time will be credited 60 Mileage points per day (1800/month) that is left of the current subscription Figured from the beginning of the Tuesday maintenance, 10am PDT July 29, 2008.

If you have friends that want to play ROSE but were concerned with the subscription cost now is a great time to invite them to join you on your adventure!

This will be a bright new beginning for ROSE online, come and join us!
Thank you,
Gravity Interactive, Inc.

Given that ROSE will be issuing in game currency credits for remaining subscription time, they’re clearly moving towards not only a free to play model, but a micro transaction one as well.  If they’re going with a micro transaction based model, who programmed the transaction module, and did the game development suffer?  We’re wondering if GravityInteractive is watching the growing trend, and taking cues from Nexon’s popular MapleStory and Kartrider along with their most recent addition: Combat Arms?  It would be the right time to test the waters of free to play micro transaction based titles, with not only Nexon blazing the path, but industry titans like EA dipping their toes in the micro transaction pool with Battlefield Heroes.

Splitscreen Studios previews free to play ‘Pirate Galaxy’

Monday, July 14th, 2008

German game developer Splitscreen Studios recently previewed a promising new title ‘Pirate Galaxy’.  The space combat game is set in the distant future where players battle to break free from the tyranny of ruthless alien oppressors.

Splitscreen is focusing on two major factors with this title.  The first featuring “breakthrough 3D graphics with astonishing visual effects that push the envelope in the browser based games segment”, and the second, a low to no barrier for entry for casual gamers.

According to Splitscreen, “You start with a modestly equipped spaceship, fighting to collect valuable crystals that you can use to upgrade, repair and customize your ship. Explore far away worlds as your ship becomes more robust and powerful. While the game is completely free to play, certain upgrades to your ship can be voluntarily purchased through the game’s integrated shop system.”

Pirate Galaxy heralds another development in lowering the barrier to entry by offering a free to play entry model, while offering players micro transaction options to upgrade their gaming experience.  On the technology side, Splitscreen keeps the experience high, while meeting a broad base of playbility.  “The advanced DirectX-based rendering engine supports all common graphics cards, dynamically adapting the graphical level of detail to the capacities of the computer that the game runs on. This ensures an optimal playing experience even on less powerful PCs.”

Pirate Galaxy is currently under development and scheduled for release later this year.  More info available at www.pirategalaxy.com.

Splitscreen Studios GmbH is a full-service game development company based in Hamburg, Germany. The company was founded in 2007 by former key employees of Bigpoint, Europe’s leading browser game publisher.

Id Software to release free to play version of classic Quake III Arena

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Id Software, publishers of the Quake series spoke with Charles Onyett from IGN regarding their newest title.  But…instead of a flashy new FPS or even an all new revamped version of the Quake series, they’re going with the future of gaming approach: Free to play.

Id is going out on a limb, and releasing Quake Live, a revamped version of the classic Quake III Arena.  The ‘new yet old’ title will receive slightly upgraded graphics and will be launched from a web browser and feature in game advertising.

“The title represents a departure and risk for the company” said id co-founder John Carmack.

“When we had made the decision at id Software to start growing into a multi-team company whereas historically we had always been one project at a time, one of my other thoughts on this project was that we’d be able to take a small team and start this less demanding project rather than start off with immediately another triple-A title that needs 50 to 80 people or whatever. A small team could be used on this and grow a kernel that if necessary we could build a larger team around and what happens with that is going to depend a lot on the commercial success of this. If Quake Live is a good success then it’s going to be one of those service model businesses where an active team stays on it forever as long as it’s generating any revenue. If it turns out that we called it wrong and there is no business case here then we’ll have a tested team that we can add more people around to do a more conventional project. We do have high hopes that this can turn out to be a good business model for us.”

As an industry veteran, Carmack knows that associated risks of developing a game like this.  “There certainly is the worry about the old tale about the pioneers, the one with all the arrows in his back and the people that come afterward and see all the pitfalls to avoid. We do think that it’s at least plausible, there are a lot of online services obviously that are doing well with whatever media types that they’re presenting. There are a lot of free games that are doing quite well and some very impressive numbers in the casual gaming market. [Quake Live] is obviously not a Flash game or a Java game, it was a state of the art game previously and it has the full features of the development house behind it, but it’s an interesting question and we’ll find out hopefully within six months or so the verdict will be in from the jury about whether this is something that works out or not, but I can’t say that we’ve got a lot of things to look at. In fact I would assume a whole lot of people would be looking at what we’re doing.”

There are no immediate plans for micro transactions to be build into the game, but rather funded by in game advertisements.  However, id software did speak to the topic of a ‘Quake Live Premium Service’.  “It may even just be the type of thing where for a few bucks you’re just in a different group that can select into sets of games that people who aren’t premium players don’t come into”.
