Zynga brings Black Friday madness to social gaming

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Ladies and Gentlemen – let the holiday shopping season…..begin! It’s post turkey day in America today, which can only mean one thing: Black Friday. Traditionally, Black Friday is the kick off to the massive holiday shopping spree that most retailers depend on to bring the revenues home. Perhaps even more so this year. But that’s not to say that the virtual world is free from any mass marketed consumerism.

black_benjaminWhile there’s a number of virtual goods price drops headed our way today, the biggest fish in the sea, Zynga is offering virtual world players some serious Black Friday offerings.

Starting out with their biggest bread winner, Zynga’s Mafia Wars will be offering discounts on some of it’s most in demand items. Starting today, and running the entire weekend (including Monday until midnight PST), Zynga will be running promos and deep discounts on “Limited Edition and consumable items.” To up the ante (and sales figures), users can track how many items they’ve purchased on a “mastery bar”. Once said users acquires a minimum of 20 items, they’ll received a special gift “über” gift.

But wait…there’s more. Mafia Wars will also be offering an hourly featured item (blue light special) that’s reported to be insanely cheap. The Black Friday promotion is tied to the already running Thanksgiving Fight promo, in which both mobs have the chance of dropping Thanksgiving themed items.

If Mafioso aren’t your thing, fear not, Zynga’s serving up other tasty Black Friday treats. Their 15.5 million monthly users Roller Coaster Kingdom will also feature a number of promos. The concept of Roller Coaster Kingdom is simple – build a world class amusement park. Not always something accomplished on the cheap. Therefore, Zynga is offering steep 25% discounts across the board. I.e. not only are they offering a 25% discount on in-game coin purchases, but also those of RMT’s.

These discounts are great for fans of the game, but they also bring up an interesting case of controlling a virtual world economy. If said ‘desireable’ objects in Mafia Wars are suddenly common (due to the large number of purchases of these items), do they still retain their desirability – and associated price point? On the other side of the coin, this might be a good way for Zynga to unload a large amount of virtual content, preparing the way for newer, rarer, and therefore more expensive items to be released into the game in the near future? Say….around Christmas? We’ll have to wait and see – but my money’s riding on new, rare content soon.

SOE confirms launch of Free Realms: Early April 09

Friday, February 13th, 2009

Hot on the heels of our coverage of John Smedley’s interview with Virtual Worlds News, Sony Online Entertainment confirmed the launch date of the PC version of their highly anticipated family friendly, free-to-play title ‘Free Realms’ at a press preview in London yesterday.  Associate Art Director Sebastian Strzalkowski also noted that the beta testing phase will commence within “a couple of weeks”.

While this launch is only for the online PC version, Free Realms is on track for a PS3 launch in Q3 09.  Bringing the free-to-play online with the PS3 somewhere between July and September could be a very wise move for SOE, as this will give them time to properly spotlight the project, as well as enough time to work out any kinks or bugs before the holiday shopping season gets underway.  The PS3 launch of Free Realms is slated to include additional exclusive content in order to celebrate the console platform launch.  The PS3 version will be available as a free download from the PlayStation Store.

The PC version of Free Realms streams from a launch website, with the initial client download clocking in at around 25MB.  Sony sees Free Realms as a multi-platform title, and Strzalkowski stated that a Mac version was “definitely on the list of platforms we want to develop for”, but could not confirm any details.  Also on the SOE radar are Flash and/or Java based extension to make the game playable on mobile phones (want to watch how fast this one rockets up the iPhone app store top 25 list?)

Confirming what Smedley discussed earlier this month, microtransactions are priority 1 in the revenue stream department.  Free Realms is slated to offer almost everything but the kitchen sink: Cosmetic upgrades, racing vehicles, and consumable potions to name a few.  These items will be available exclusively via SOE’s Station Cash service.  And lest we forget, SOE is also bridging the gap between real and virtual worlds with a Topps collector card series that ties directly into the game.

While microtransactions are a key focus for SOE in the initial entry to the free-to-play market, they’re not selling themselves short, and are offering an optional subscription service for $4.99 that provides players with VIP access to premium content.  Again, this is an optional service, and not necessary.  Should players not choose a subscription service, they will be required to opt into seeing in-game advertising and sponsorships, which if done right could even heighten the experience and add a ‘real-world’ touch.

Sony Online Entertainment is aiming the title at the 10 – 14 year old market, but from what I’ve seen, this is a fun and engaging title that is fully capable of spanning  multiple generations.  But don’t take my word for it, have a view of what John Smedley and Creative Director Laralyn McWilliams have to say about Free Realms (try to ignore John’s announcement that the title is slated for a Q2 release.  Even the best of planning can sometimes goes awry).

Holiday 2008 online video game sales top brick and mortar

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

Comscore has recently released figures comparing holiday spending 2007 vs. 2008 revealing that both online sales of Sports and Fitness equipment and Video Games increased and outperformed offline sales during the holiday 2008 season.

Data compared data from comScores’s overall (online and offline) consumer e-commerce spending published by MasterCard Avisors’ SpendingPulse Unit from November 1 – December 24 of 2007.

The data doesn’t lie, with comScore showing that the top growing online product category for the holiday season was Sports and Fitness, growing 18 percent yoy, with Video Games, Consoles and Accessories growing a close 14 percent.  Naturally, the top grossing platforms include the big three: Nintendo Wii, Microsoft xbox 360, and Sony’s Playstation 3.  The only other positive growth segment was apparel and accessories, which generated higher sales as a result of retailers’ price slashing and promotions, combined with bad weather across most of the country.

And while certain categories lost significant traction across the board, the silver lining is that the online component of these sales is significantly higher than their offline counterparts

  • Sales of Apparel & Accessories was up four percent online, compared with a 19-21% decline in overall sales of the category.
  • Electronics declined five percent online, while Home, Garden and Furniture declined 14% online. This compares with a 26% decline in overall sales of Electronics/ Appliances.
  • Jewelry & Watches declined 24% online, compared with a 34% decline in overall sales of Luxury Goods (including Jewelry & Watches).

“For an online holiday shopping season that recorded a disappointing three-percent decline in sales, a positive note is that e-commerce trends outperformed overall consumer spending in several product categories, which is to say that e-commerce continued to capture an increasing share of consumers’ wallet,” said Gian Fulgoni, comScore chairman.

LittleBigPlanet kicks off with microtransactions beginning this week

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

After a bit of a rocky start, LittleBigPlanet seems to be up and running, including the microtransaction engine powering in-game purchases.  New downloadable content will be rolled out starting on Thursday, November 6th.  This DLC will consist of new costumes for your sackboy set at various price points, along with new creation aspects for you pop-it tool.

Starting on Thursday, LittleBigPlanet players can head on over to the PlayStation store and pick up some shiny new duds aka the “Launch Spacesuit” and/or a “Halloween Mask”.  As a special limited offer, the PlayStation store is offering both costumes at the unbeatable low low cost of…..nothing.  Yes that’s right sackboys and girls, step right up and grab yo’ self some free clothes.

A great introductory tool, Sony plans on scaling out additional microtransaction goods every Thursday (presumably for weekend enjoyment).  Prices will vary depending upon what you’re looking to equip, but a Sephiroth or some Solid Snake gear is set at the $1.99 price each.

LittleBigPlanet has created an interesting pricing structure for sackboy costumes, even adding a ‘rare’ (think purples) costume to the selection, obviously set at a higher pricepoint.  Some of the standard Sackboy/girl costumes priced at $0.99 include a frog suit and gorilla costume:

Premium costumes are also available for $1.99 each, and feature higher levels of detail:

While the Rare costumes have yet to have a price attached to them.  According to the official PlayStation blog, they’re waiting on just the right moment (read: Holiday shopping season) to release said Rare costume packs.

Not to settle on just individual packs, LittleBigPlanet is creating additional incentives to purchase by making both Basic and Premium costume bundles available.  The basic bundle will give users 4 of the basic costumes as a reduced price of $2.99, while the premium pack bundles 4 premium costumes at a reduced price of $5.99.
