Gameloft posts 33.6 million EUR Q2 Sales figures – up 15%

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

Paris, France based Gameloft posted their Q2 numbers yesterday, achieving consolidated sales of 33.6 million EUR, or roughly 43.8 million USD. This figure represents a 15 percent growth YoY. As expected, the majority of Gameloft’s revenue is derived from the European and North American markets.

When compared to the previous year, Gameloft is “up” on all accounts. Q1 2009 saw 30.8 m EUR, while Q1 2010, 33 million EUR, representing a 7 percent growth. Likewise, when combined, Q’s 1 and 2 of 2009 totaled 60.1 million in revenue, 2010, 66.6 million, and 11 percent increase.

When looking for the secret to their success, Gameloft is quick to point out that traditional Java and Brew based phones, as well as the massive global adoption of smartphones as key factors. Naturally, Apple’s iPhone comes to mind, and Gameloft has positioned itself as THE premier games publisher for the iPhone and iPad, reflected in their AppStore growth of 113 percent during Q2 2010.

Looking beyond just the iPhone, Gameloft believes new technologies from Samsung, Nokia, and Google will continue to sustain this growth. They’re also looking very closely at what potential the iPad holds for their future endeavors. Adding to this projected growth and profitability, the company is in an ideal position to benefit from the rapidly developing digital distribution channels including phones, tablets, and console systems.

Gameloft launches eight iPad specific titles

Tuesday, April 6th, 2010

With the Apple iPad making it’s triumphant splash on the market, it’s time to take a look at the social games developers that are undoubtedly lining up in droves to cash in. One such games maker is Gameloft, who last Friday announced not one, not two, but eight specific titles that are ready and waiting for new iPad users to dive right into.

Gameloft iPad

Keeping in mind that the iPad is (arguably) just a giant iPod Touch, at least in respect to the (modified) operating system, games developers are poised to make a killing with social apps. Remember, the current iPhone OS incorporates microtransactions, as does the iPad. While there’s no specific mention of microtransactions in Gameloft’s releases, a number of them are ripe for the option. Gameloft’s lineup includes: N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance, Modern Combat: Sandstorm, Dungeon Hunter, Asphalt 5, UNO, NFL 2010, Let’s Golf, and Real Football 2010.

Currently, Gameloft is riding the “new” wave, capitalizing on a number of the iPad’s unique interface. Noting that the screen resolution of the iPad is 1024 x 768 (remember that one?), HD gaming has now come to the portable platform. All of Gameloft’s iPad specific applications have a much higher level of detail. For example, their Real Football 2010 has been completely remastered to include HD resolution grass, textures, characters, and animations.

Likewise, Gameloft’s N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard Alliance App utilizes the iPad’s control features, allowing users to open an airlock door by rotating three fingers, as well as sliding buttons to make various object move, elevators for example.

Where Gameloft expects the iPad to excel is in level of complexity now available. That’s not to say that a number of iPhone apps are not highly detailed, but rather the more powerful iPad allows for greater flexibility. Increased depth of field, complex map layouts, and more intense action sequences can be found in their iPad specific applications. For example, the N.O.V.A. title allows for multi-target acquisition, activated via a user-drawn grid that serves as the targeting method for an in-game rocket launcher.

Finally, we all know that gaming is fun, but even more so when doing it with friends. Gameloft’s iPad titles will be easier and more attractive for multiplayer gaming. One of my personal favorite casual/social games produced by Gameloft, UNO, allows for up to four players to compete against each other on one iPad by selecting “One Device Multiplayer” mode. Likewise, for multiple device play, UNO also allows friends on different iPads or iPhones to connect for local and online Wi-Fi gameplay.

“With iPhone and iPod touch, Apple changed the way consumers perceive and interact with their devices and created a revolutionary era for the mobile gaming industry,” said Michel Guillemot, president of Gameloft. “We are taking full advantage of all the new possibilities and features iPad is bringing to developers with games that will once again transform the digital gaming experience.”

Gameloft reports 20 percent increase in sales over the first half of 2009

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

Ah yes, what would mid-summer be without a plethora of financial statements and results? Charting the results coming out this week, we’ve got Changyou up, Ubisoft down, and Gameloft up. In Gameloft’s primarily mobile gaming focused world, Q’s 1 and 2 have seen reasonable growth, indicating that they’re clearly delivering what customers want.

Banking approximately €60 million during the first half of 2009, representing a 20 percent growth year-over-year. Side by side, Gameloft’s numbers:

With the majority of their focus on building mobile games utilizing Java, Brew, and Symbian technologies, 95 percent of the company’s revenues derive from this sector. The remaining 5 percent come from console games sales. Gameloft also supports titles for WiiWare, DS, Xbox LIVE arcade, iPod/iPhone, and PCs. Gameloft attributes part of it’s success to manufacturers advancements and innovations, specifically Nokia and Samsung. Obviously, when speaking mobile games, one can and must not overlook the 800 pound gorilla in the room that is Apple’s iPhone, which Gameloft points to as a source of it’s success, citing the AppStore as a major source of income. And not to be left out of the party, Gameloft is also seeing significant numbers arising from RIM’s blackberry devices.

Gameloft has a number of partnership agreements with some of the largest names in the business including Viacom, Sony Pictures, ABC,, Ferrari and Ubisoft Entertainment, as well as individual personalities such as Kobe Bryant, Derek Jeter, Reggie Bush, and yes….Chuck Norris. Perhaps Gameloft can leverage some Chuck Norris to help Ubisoft’s faltering numbers?

While Gameloft maintains a network of offices around the world, the largest share of Q 1+2 revenues came from Europe (38 percent). North America continues to be a strong growth market, garnering 33 percent of Gameloft’s first half revenues, and showing a 39 percent increase in activity. The remaining 28 percent of revenues come from areas listed only as “the rest of the world.” Stepping back and looking at the year-over-year picture thus far, Europe again takes the top earning spot with 43 percent, North America showing 30 percent, and “the rest of the world” making up 27 percent of total sales.

Gameloft rocks the top spot in Mobile Gaming

Friday, June 13th, 2008

Pocket Gamer, considered by most to be the industries leading figure in mobile gaming recently published it’s findings of a comparison study reviewing all game publishers. The study was based on 313 international game reviews made public between January and March 2008. Rankings and ratings were compiled from heavy hitters Pocket Gamer, IGN Wireless, Mobile Game FAQs, Airgamer, and midget review.

Gameloft came out on top, receiving the award for “Best-Ranked Mobile Game Publisher”. Editor in chief of pocket gamer said, “Gameloft’s tally was based only on 34 available reviews out of the 313 that we studied. This makes the outcome all the more impressive because they managed to secure very high scores based on a small number of published reviews.”

“Receiving this honor from Pocket Gamer is a true privilege,” said Michel Guillemot, President and CEO, Gameloft. “We will strive to live up to this distinction by continuing to deliver the best titles worldwide.” Gameloft surpassed the competition with an average score of 7.94 out of 10, ahead of the second place publisher that earned a median score of 7.61.

Gameloft is a leading international publisher and developer of video games for mobile phones and consoles. Creating games since 1999, they have options available for handsets equipped with Java, Brew, or Symbian technology. Gameloft also publishes titles for WiiWare and DS, Xbox LIVE arcade, iPods, and PCs. Gameloft’s top titles include Block Breaker Deluxe, Asphalt: Urban GT, and New York Nights. Gameloft enjoys network distribution in over 80 countries globally.
