Two months and ten days after the commencement of their open beta phase, Nexon Europe is proud to announce the commercial launch of their free-to-play, online first person shooter Combat Arms. This also marks the official opening of Nexon’s revenue generator, the in-game item shop, the “Black Market”. Players are now free to choose from additional mercenaries including the games’ first female character, and a wide variety of customizable items, gears, and weapons.
“We had a great beta run and have continuously received huge feedbacks after the official launch,” said Sung-Jin Kim, Manager of Europe Business Team at Nexon. “Players really love the fast-paced game play along with the socialization features of Combat Arms Europe. The opening of the Black Market will bring another dimension to the customization attributes of the game, and offer players at all levels to opt for further play options to enhance their game play without harming the fairness of play.”
The newly launched “Black Market” will now allow European Combat Arms players additional methods by which they can personalize the game and their character’s individual look while slugging it out on the battlefield. Additionally, Combat Arms clans can now further customize their brothers-in-arms by creating their own unique clan emblem, which is then displayed in-game, as well as on the Combat Arms web portal.
Kamara, the games first female character has also now joined the battle, available as a mercenary, which may be hired as an added character for 30 days, and starts off with 30,000 Gear points. In addition to purchasing Kamara or Zadan’s services, players are also offered new machineries including an M4A1 Desert Warrior, a Dragunov Black, a P90TR, to name a few. The “Black Market” has also been stocked with a host of new gears and camouflage options to spice up players looks and capacity. And if all these shiny new toys weren’t enough for you, Combat Arms official European release also includes a new battlefield to be conquered. The “Waverider” map is set in the resort city of Rupheria, originally designed and developed to reflect a traditional European coastal resort (can you say Monaco?).
Nexon isn’t just resting on their laurels, as they have a full schedule of new items in development and will be introducing these items into the game via the “Black Market” shop over the coming months. Also in the docket are new maps, combat modes, weaponry, and additional free content.
If you’ve yet to give this successful free-to-play online first person shooter a go, now is the perfect time; download Combat Arms for free at: combatarms.nexoneu.com.

Nexon Europe Limited, the European branch of top free-to-play publisher Nexon recently announced that they plan on launching ‘Combat Arms Europe’ via a closed beta test starting in late October of this year.
Combat Arms is a multi-player first person shooter that has already received praise far and wide, and features non-stop action in various battlefields where players engage enemies in different game modes. Not just your typical FPS, Combat Arms takes the genre to a new level by allowing for massive character customizations, as well as a weapon modification system. This modification tool allows players to attach various enhancements to their weapon(s) of choice including, scopes, silencers, and extra ammo. Combat Arms also features a unique backpack system which allows players to combine various sets of weapons, thereby creating their own customized bringer of death.
My own personal experience with Combat Arms matches up with company jargon – it is rather easy to pick up and learn the basic and more advanced controls, thereby allowing just about anyone to have a fair chance at fragging goodness. Racking up some in-game spendable cash is easily obtainable, but also providing a decent challenge. Experience points and cash are handed out based on the number of victories and kills shots made. Once accumulated, these cash points allow players to rank up and acquire mounts and new weapons and equipment. As with most MMO’s, Combat Arms features a full clan system, allowing players to recruit, manage, and communicate with other clan members.
“The FPS genre is traditionally an area for hardcore gamers with a steep learning curve, but Combat Arms takes it to another level, offering a low barrier of entry with its free-to-play offering and low system requirements,” says Sung-Jin Kim, Manager of Europe Business Team at Nexon. “Yet, the sophisticated graphics and in-depth gameplay mechanics do not fall behind the FPS titles that are out in the market, and can therefore accommodate beginners as well as hardcore gamers at the same time. The response to Combat Arms in the North American region was huge, and we have experienced a great demand from the European audience to set up a service for Europe. Now we are happy that we are just about to bring the title to the European continent, starting with the closed beta in late October”.
Nexon’s Combat Arms is free-to-play and financed via various cosmetic microtransactions. If you’re living in North America, or don’t mind a bit of lag with your frag, you can pick up the combat arms client at: http://combatarms.nexon.net/. The client is currently available only to PC users, but runs just fine in either Parallels or VMWare on Mac.
While most of Nexon’s titles focus around ‘fun’ and ‘play’ offering a first person shooter is certainly a great way for Nexon to expand it’s portfolio and start bringing in a completely different type of gamer. Response thus far as been mostly positive, from an often skeptical target audience.

True Games Interactive announced yesterday that it’s signed an exclusive deal with GOA, the gaming unit of Orange, to exclusively publish, distribute and operate their upcoming title from Petroglyph Studios.
Back in April of this year, True Games announced that it had partnered with Petroglyph on an upcoming free-to-play, microtransaction based game for the PC. GOA will work the launch and operations of the European market, while True Games Interactive will handle the North American market. True Games is also currently in negotiations with partners in Asian markets.
“When we partnered with Petroglyph our pledge to them was that we would make their game a global sensation and that we would work with only the highest quality partners like GOA to help support it,” said Jeff Lujan, Founder and Chairman of True Games Interactive. “Traditionally worldwide partners license a game after it’s been completed, but we are working across the globe to locate partners who can contribute to design direction and adapt the game for cultural tastes in each territory for a true worldwide launch.”
GOA’s no stranger to the market, currently operating one of the largest casual gaming portals in Europe, along with publishing EA/Mythic’s Dark Age of Camelot, and ramping up for the soon to launch EA/Mythic – Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning in Europe.
“GOA’s products are only the highest quality, highly anticipated products in the online gaming category and that is why Petroglyph and True Games’ project is such a perfect fit. We are confident that our audience will be very enthusiastic about this game and that it will be a major title,” said Ghislaine Le Rhun, Executive Director of GOA.
If the name Petroglyph is ringing more than one bell, you’re on the right track. In addition to winning awards for their Star Wars: Empire At War and Universe At War series, Petroglyph Studios members played key roles in creating the classic ‘Command and Conquer’ series while at Westwood Studios. Petroglyph Studios partnered earlier this year with True Games to bring their first microtransaction based title to the PC platform.
While details about the actual game itself are scant, both companies indicated that they are close to making a major announcement regarding the fully features of this up and coming hot potato. Stay Tuned.
“Whenever we approach a potential partner for this exciting new game their eyes immediately light up,” said Bob Drobish, CEO of True Games. “With Petroglyph’s pedigree and their loyal following of fans we are sure this product will be a worldwide success–it is just a matter of choosing the right partners– and we couldn’t be more certain of our partnership with GOA.”

While retailers were dropping enough hints to walk from Europe to North America and back without getting one’s feet wet last week about a December 3rd Starcraft II release date, Blizzard VP Rob Pardo effectively put the squash on these rumors at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational.
Speaking about the game’s development, he answered that the Blizz crew was “about a third of the way through”, and are concentrating on story structure and cinematics at this point. In other words, all the pretty go betweens we see between battles, etc. Pardo did comment however that by the end of 2008, Blizzard should have something very impressive to show off.
So there we have it. Rumors squashed. I guess it’s time to update that Christmas wish list as it looks like Starcraft II isn’t going to hit the streets until 2009.
Blizzard didn’t let us walk away with an acrid taste in our mouths. They DID provide some tasty screenshots to make that anticipation just a bit sweeter:

And don’t forget what we’re already been privy to:

Whoa…Sonic who? Sonic the what? You’ve probably asked yourself the same question after reading the headline. But yes, Sonic is back. Sonic and Sega are back in a big way.
After the Dreamcast factory doors closed, it was pretty much the last nail in the coffin for what once was one of Sega’s most successful games: Sonic the Hedgehog. Or at least the one we all played before we got any other games, as Sonic was included.
Well it seems as though Sega is bringin’ back the old skool with some new skool skillz. Check out the trailer:
OMFG! Did you catch that? Daaaang! THIS my friends, is what a good Sonic game should be! Super fast, almost to the point of “RUFKM? I can’t see what’s going on!” levels, brilliantly worked 3d graphics and environments (I can’t wait to see Sonic blaze through the colleseum) and the music! Yay for Sega for getting the soundtrack right (Think “I want to fly high”). Oh, and did you catch the context sensitive buttons popping up during that alley run? W00t!
Hopefully this isn’t just another Intelliscope/Microsoft, “hey let’s leak it to the public and see if they’re interested, and then deny the whole thing” ploy. Although it doesn’t look like it as the trailer teases with “Holiday 2008” at the very end.
Note to self….clear at least 3 days after Christmas to dedicate to a fury blue erinaceomorpha with his incredible speed!

And in the red corner….weighing in at 165 lbs. and hailing from the great state of Arizona….The GOP nominee…..Senator…Jooooooooooooooooooohn McCaaaaaaaaaaaaaaain.
Yes, you heard me right (and I know you just did the voice in your head as well), Arizona Senator and Republican party nominee John McCain steps into the ring with Illinois Senator and Democratic nominee Barak Obama via play.de’s McCain vs. Obama – the fight of the century.
You yourself can now determine the fait of the US presidential race! Hop in the ring, choose your side and knock the opponent silly with jabs, bob and weaves, and the death blow: Upper Cut! Upper Cut! Think it’s game over for Hillary? Not so much. She’s built into the game as the super powerful, super sexy ring girl that appears between rounds in her stars-and-stripes bikini. Guest appearances in the on looking crowd also include GW Bush, Sly Stallone, Dick Chaney, Bill and Chelsea Clinton, Condi Rice, and Rudy Gulliani.
The game, developed by play.de, one of Europe’s largest online gaming sites, can be played in two different modes: PvP or PvC. Both candidates have equal chances to win, regardless of age, height, and battle experience (don’t forget that McCain is not only a decorated Vietnam war veteran, but also has first hand boxing experience).
You can give John and Barak a ‘fight to the death’ at: http://obama.play.de/us
And play a number of other titles at: http://www.play.de

Now here’s one that’s near and dear to my heart. Not that I drive a Ferrari (unless you want to think of VW as a watered down Ferrari?) but for that exact point. Driving sims are about as close as most of us are ever going to get to sitting behind a million dollar super machine.
So, last year, when waves started being made by Koch Media that they’d be distributing a Ferrari based game in Europe, my heart felt a little pitter patter. Not much more news hit the stands for a while until recently.
Activision announced that they’d be distributing the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli via System3 in North America. The Italian Stallions are expected to be on shelves this summer and available for the PS2, PS3, Nintendo DS, and Wii systems.
The game will feature more than 15 international real deal racing circuits, along with multiple game play modes such as Ferrari Challenge Seasons, Time Trials, Endurance, and Quick Sprint. Up to 16 players can rock out with their stallions out online in a variety of challenges including racing circuits and hill climbs.
Dave Oxford from Activision Publishing said, “For the last sixty years Ferrari has been synonymous with precision, performance and graceful design, so expectations for the game will be high from auto enthusiasts and racing game fans alike. Everyone involved in Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli has been committed to ensuring this product over-delivers on the experience of this legendary brand.”
System 3 CEO Mark Cale commented, “Without a doubt, this is the defining Ferrari experience for video games. It has been a collaboration with professionals on every level and we have justly captured the power, beauty, and excitement that is the Ferrari Challenge Series. This excitement is taken to a whole new level with the partnership of Activision’s power within the North American marketplace.”
To add even more goodness to the already smokin’ hot exhaust pipes, The Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli will also feature downloadable content such as cars, tracks, and customization options available on a monthly basis.

If you live anywhere outside the US, your chances of picking up the super spiffy Collectors Survival Edition of Fallout3 are pretty much slim to none.
To add insult to injury, even residents of the Great White North are going to have to pack it up and make a day trip over the boarder to their American P.O. box to receive their copy.
The survival edition comes decked out with a life-sized replica of the wrist mounted Pip-Boy 3000 worn by characters in the game, a super smooth Vault Tech metal lunch box, a Vault Boy bobble-head (who’s ride or desk would be complete without one?), an ‘Art of’ book and a ‘Making of’ DVD. Oh, and the game is included as well.
Amazon.com confirms that the item will only be shipped within the US (and or APO/FPO boxes), and hits the streets October 7th.
So the question is, how on earth will those of us in Europe that are serious fanboys of all things 3000 get out hands on this rockin’ wrapping of Fallout 3? Well, look no further, as yours truly has a connection in the States, and can get my hands on a copy shipped direct from the land of cadilliacs and cheeseburgers. So who’s up for a contest? Based on repsonses below, I might even be able to convince upper management to sponsor a contest with the Survival Edition as the grand prize. In addition to Fallout 3 Survival Edition, we’d be sure to chuck in all kinds of fatfoogoo goodies as well.
So let’s hear it….who is Europe’s biggest Fallout fan?

Yes that’s right ladies and gentlemen, fatfoogoo is heading to the land of fish and chips, one seriously big clock, and drivers on the wrong side of the road.
Last year over 450 attendees from 23 countries descended upon the Virtual Worlds Forum Europe in London. With over 80 speakers, 2 days of workshops, conferences, expos and networking functions this was THE conference to be at.
This year’s event looks to meet and exceed expectations. With over 600+ professionals interviewed regarding content, take home podcasts, demo and keynote theatre as well as tech developer streams, that’s enough alone to make one shout ‘Blimey!’. But wait….there’s more! Building upon the overwhelming success of the expo area, this year’s Forum includes stands from 25 exhibitors, a shell build scheme, previously mentioned demo and keynote theatre live and in person on the demo floor, live tech developer streams, and 400+ expo only passes.
Direct from Virtual Worlds Forum:
VWF 08 helps you harness the power of virtual worlds to engage with clients, suppliers or customers, connecting brands, corporations, digital and virtual worlds agencies, entertainment and games companies, technologists, academics, regulators and VCs.
We are working on bringing you a bigger expo, more great content and workshops, and parties. We like to party.
Funny…we like to party too!
Our beloved fatfoogoos are raiding London this 6-7 October, are already registered as Associate Sponsors, and our very own Martin Herdina has applied for a speaker placement. Alas, the VWF hasn’t gotten back to us quite yet, but if placement if based on knowledge, experience and all around ‘He’s a good guy to listen to, and knows his stuff’; Herdina’s headed to the podium mighty fast.

Ok peeps, last shot. Here we go again with what surely will be one hell storm of ticket sales again. Blizz announced earlier this week that they’ve got a whole new block of tickets up for grabs for the Paris event.
Tickets go on sale at 15:00 Central European Time (remember, we’re +6 hours ahead of the East Coast of the US) today. In addition to securing your slot at what’s looking like one helluva good show, Blizz also dropped it like it’s hot and announced the live performance schedule. The live and in person video game orchestra, Video Games Live will be dishing out some of your favorite in game tunes, while Blizzard’s own in-house band, Level 70 Elite Tauren Chieftain will be performing live at the closing ceremony. On a side note….will they have to change the name of the band in November (my personal prediction for the Lich King release)?
As mentioned in a previous post, the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational is one spicy meatball going down in Paris on the 28th and 29th of June. Both days are jam packed with all kinds of wicked cool stuff to do and see, including hands on play of the newest stuff Blizz has got in the labs i.e. yes, you’ll get to see the Death Knight and Lich King far before anyone else. In addition, Blizz is hosting a whole round of developer discussions, presentations, and casual (read…I’m gonna pwnd ur @$$ n00b!) tournaments, contents, and much, much more…!
Les Ticket ain’t exactly cheap weighing in at 70 € / £55 for the 2 day event, but then again, where ELSE in the world are you going to get a sneak peak at the Wrath of the Lich King AND Starcraft II?
Again, ticket sales start today at 15:00 CET. Have your credit and/or debit card ready, hit the F5 button on http://eu.blizzard.com/wwi08/ticketsales.xml at 3, and hopefully…..we’ll see you there!
