Nexon America appoints new CEO: Daniel S. Kim

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

Daniel S. Kim has recently been appointed to the CEO position at Nexon America.  He will oversee the day-to-day management and operations of the premier destination for free-to-play games in North America.  Wasting no time, Kim’s appointment is effective as of March 3rd.

daniel_kim_nexon“Nexon emerged as an innovator in the gaming industry by mapping its own direction, and I believe in maintaining this spirit as CEO,” said Kim. “There’s great potential in this company, and what we can deliver to the entertainment marketplace in North America. Nexon pioneered the free-to-play model in North America, and I’m thrilled to join Nexon America to continue to lead the market with more high quality, live gaming experiences for our users.”

Kim, who holds a Masters Degree of Science in Product Design and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Stanford University, has been with Los Angeles based Nexon since November 2006 (remember, Nexon North America was founded in 2005).  Prior to coming to Nexon, he served as a VP in charge of Asia-Pacific business development for IDEO. And remember Handspring Inc.?  Kim was one of the folks behind this product, where he served as senior product design engineer.  At Handspring Inc., Kim managed research, design, development and production of the digital device.  Capping off a list of already impressive accomplishments, Daniel Kim has also served as director of design and user experience at DoDots, Inc.

“The growth of free-to-play gaming in North America is hitting its stride and Daniel is an ideal candidate to lead Nexon America in a competitive marketplace,” said S.W. Choi, global chief executive officer for Nexon Group. “He is a proven leader in our company, and understands how Nexon can effectively grow as a brand and a business in North America.”

Kim has certainly put in his time with Nexon, and his double threat of Product design and engineering put him in a unique position to drive the Nexon ship.  I guess my only question is, “What happened to John H. Chi, the companies former President and CEO?”

Congratulations Mr. Kim, we look forward to seeing how you take Nexon North America to the next level.

Cross Fire nets 25,000 users in 3 weeks

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

It looks like 2009 is quickly shaping up to be the year of free-to-play first-person-shooters (FPS).  Admittedly, the timing of Subagames’ release of their open beta stats is slightly suspect, appearing just one day after Nexon had released their whopping 2 million North American player stats.  However, Cross Fire’s numbers are quite impressive in their own respect: netting 25,000 registered players since the opening of the beta on January 30, 2009.  The open beta runs through the end of February, and if G4BOX Inc. and Wicked Interactive Ltd., the North American publishers of Cross Fire stay on target they could end up doubling this number.

Chief Executive Officer of Wicked Interactive Garvin Yeung says, “We knew there was an audience out there that was really anticipating Cross Fire, so we expected a good result.”

G4BOX CEO Howard He adds, “But even we are amazed by the overwhelming response that Cross Fire has garnered thus far.”

As previously reported, the Cross Fire website had received 1.9M hits prior to the November 7th closed beta launch, two-thirds of which came from the US.  Cross Fire has been a success in Asian markets, with an excess of 500,000 users simultaneously playing.  The North American open beta introduced new features including an in-game friends list, new maps, weapons, and items.  In addition, a military ranking and stat-tracking package has been introduced.  Wicked and G4BOX have started tracking players’ progress and activity since the open beta onward so that players are able to accurately gauge their skills against the rest of the Cross Fire community.  And as with any respectable MMO, Cross Fire now features a clan system whereby players can band together to play in persistent teams.  Supported by a Subagames clan page, this feature maintains rankings of all clans not only active in Cross Fire, but across the entire catalogue of Subagames’ free MMO’s.

Developed by SmileGate and Neowiz, Cross Fire is an online military FPS developed for the PC platform.  Players choose their role in this conflict scenario shooter, either Black List or Global Risk mercenaries.  They are then thrown into the thick of battle by joining a combat team that must cooperatively work together in order to complete objective based operations.  And while Cross Fire does sound a bit like the rising number of free-to-play FPS’s currently making their way to market, their standout feature is the unique “Ghost Mode”.  In this mode, one team is in possession of a top-secret cloaking device that allows them to become invisible to the opposing team.  “Ghost” teams are armed only with knives, and must utilize stealth tactics to hunt and track the other team.  Other play modes available include Team Death Match, Search and Destroy and Elimination modes.

Naturally, as with most free-to-plays, Cross Fire features an extensive set of character customization and upgrade options.  This in-game currency used in Cross Fire, may also be used in any of Subagames’ other titles including Metin2, ACE Online and Prison Tale, as well as the upcoming Prison Tale 2.

Multiplayer Social Games company Iminlikewithyou names Dan Porter CEO

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

New York based multiplayer social games company Iminlikewithyou.com has named Dan Porter as its new chief executive officer reports VentureBeat.  First up on Porter’s agenda?  Getting the company on track with monetizing it’s social games and continued expansion.

Porter comes to Iminlikewithyou from his previous position as Senior Vice President at Virgin, where he was in charge of venture investing and corporate development for Virgin North America.  The move to Iminlikewithyou is certainly a shifting of gears for Porter, as he now heads up a company with less than 10 employees.  Conversely, Iminlikewithyou is well funded, having received $1.5M to date from Spark Capital, Baseline Ventures, and Betaworks, as well as getting off the ground with individual angel funding from Ron Conway, Marc Andreessen, and Kevin Rose of digg fame.

Iminlikewithyou has humble beginnings, resembling something more akin to a dating site, has refocused their efforts over the years, and now brands itself as a social games portal.  Porter reports that the site has proven compelling to regular users as the iminlikewithyou sees between 500k and 1M visitor per month.  Combined, these users have spent over 50 million minutes on the site in January alone.  Porters hopes for the site include monetizing via virtual goods microtransactions and subscriptions.

Some of the most popular titles on the site include Balloono and Blockles.  Iminlikewith you currently caters mainly to the 15 – 25 age group, and is evenly split between males and females.

And while iminlikewithyou does face a number of steep competitors including playfish, and Big Fish Games, there is a high potential there, as iminlikewithyou holds one key component that the others do not: a thriving social network operating outside the realm of it’s games.

MMO Perfect World opens the beta doors

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Perfect World Co., Ltd. announced yesterday that they are opening the beta doors to allow more players to experience the gripping action of their new free-to-play title: Perfect World.

An interesting point to note is that Perfect World was originally developed with a subscription based budget in mind including all the features one would expect from an MMORPG: guilds, crafting, mounts, etc.  Since flipping the switch on the free-to-play model, Perfect World has increased the player base to number in the millions across 10 countries.  The former subscription based business model could also herald a new standard for free-to-plays as the 3D gaming engine and graphics are of a quality not normally found in a free-to-play title.  In other words: Perfect World is raising the bar.

The official full release of Perfect World is slated for later this fall, complete with international servers (localized specifically for American audiences).  The launch will also feature several already released expansion packs, mirroring the current state of play in the Chinese market.

“I am very pleased by the successful closed beta testing in North America, and we are excited to introduce ‘Perfect World International’ to more online game players,” said Mr. Alan Chen, Senior Vice President of Perfect World and Chief Executive Officer of PWE.  “I believe that the efforts we have devoted to the localization work and our execution ability will enhance our position in North America.”

“Our progress in North America again evidenced our commitment to executing our international expansion strategy.  I believe the launch of ‘Perfect World International’ in North America marks a key milestone for us and helps us further position Perfect World as a leading provider in the global online game market in the long-term,” added Mr. Michael Chi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Perfect World.

While the game only features three races (Humans, Untamed, and Winged Elves), with two classes per race, the customization levels are where players can really dig deep.  Other features include guild vs. guild wars, territory wars (up to 80 vs. 80 for land and monetary rewards), crafting, world events, and an in-game marriage system.  No MMO would be complete without a decent land and air mount, and Perfect World doesn’t disappoint.  Instead of an overall general mount, Perfect World features race specific mounts.  Humans ride something akin to a broomstick, but in the form of a massive sword, while Untamed can rise from the ashes and fly their phoenix.  Speaking of mounts – PVP players should be happy to know that mounted combat is possible.

To give Perfect World a go of your own, head on over to the website and download the client (2.32 gb).

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

In case your living under a rock, The9 is a leading retailer in China’s ‘Holy cow, that’s just enormous’ gaming industry.  They focus mainly on operating and developing top titles for the Chinese online gaming market.  The9 does this either directly with in house titles OR through affiliate licensing deals.  Some of the titles in The9’s portfolio are Granado Espada, Soul of the Ultimate Nation, and a small title you may have heard of: World of Warcraft.  To say that The9 are a small deal would be a large mistake.

So it might come as a bit of a surprise that Chief Financial Officer Tony Tse has decided to step down from his post with The9.  Mr. Tse has resigned sue to personal and family reasons according to The9’s PR rep.  Tse will leave the 9 effective July 4th.

When you’re managing that amount of cash, time really IS money.  Wasting now time or money, The9 have also announced that they’ve appointed Mr. George Lai as new man behind the bucks, effective July 3rd (So they have 2CFO’s on the 3rd?  Who gets the office?)

Prior to The9, Lai has worked at Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu since 2000 and served in various positions including audit manager and senior auditr in Hong Kong, New York and Beijing.  In other words, don’t even try to squeeze a penny by this guy…he knows his stuff.

Mr. Jun Zhu, The9′s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, commented:
“Although we are sorry to see Tony’s departure due to personal and family reasons, we would like to express our sincere gratitude to his hard work during his serving period at The9.  In addition, we are very pleased to welcome George on board as our new Chief Financial Officer. George has extensive knowledge in US GAAP and solid background in dealing with public company issues, especially in the fast booming internet industries, and we believe he will fully utilize these knowledge and skill-sets to perform the important managerial role of Chief Financial Officer at The9.”
